Kitchen in Alder
Any of the furniture-making woods (see under FURNITURE ) can be used for kitchen cabinets but for worktops, which have to stand up to more knocks, we suggest the following, in descending order of price:
CANADIAN HARD ROCK MAPLE
PAPUA NEW GUINEA ROSEWOOD
ENGLISH/EUROPEAN CHERRY
SYCAMORE
BEECH
For a kitchen where the wear is anticipated to be only moderate, ALDER is an attractive alternative for both worktops and cabinets. Alder is good value, an under-rated wood. It comes in warm shades, ranging from yellow to a rich warm red.
